Prevalence of Recurrent Aphthous Ulcer and Its Some Predisposing Factors in A Group of Egyptian Dental Students.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of recurring aphthous ulcers and some of their predisposing factors in a group of Egyptian dental students. Subjects and Methods: The current study was performed on a total of 150 females at the Faculty of Dental Medicine for girls. The questionnaire included questions about ulcers, whether the individual has any history of recurrent aphthous ulcer or not, triggering factors, and if a medication was taken for the same problem. The data from the questionnaire were analyzed with the SPSS program 16 for Microsoft Windows Results: There were 125/150 students with experience of aphthous ulcer giving a prevalence of 83.3%, and Approximately 42.4% of students reported that there was a recurrence of aphthous ulcer. The duration for healing was reported to be less than 10 days among 88%, Approximately 59.2% of patients reported that their RAU (recurrent aphthous ulcer) was related to stress. Conclusion: The present study sheds light on the prevalence of recurrent aphthous ulcers and also points to the importance of thorough history taking to identify the main risk factors of the ulceration and then to get the needed preventive measures.
